If you’re feeling the economic pinch and you want to know more about homemade electric generators then you must read the following – you are sure to find it of interest. For starters, how about being able to tap into enough electricity to run air conditioners, heaters, washers, dryers, and more, all alone, at almost no cost to you – does this sound unbelievable? I suggest you read on and you’ll realize what is possible.

It’s like this – most people expect the electric company to supply their electricity; they then pay their monthly bills and at the same time watch their bank account decreasing for this basic necessity. Alternatively, some former customers of the electric company went a different route since they were fed up with expensive and unnecessary power bills – they discovered a way of generating their own power – as much as they want – that would last for a lifetime.

As you proceed with your research in the area of homemade electric generators take into consideration the fact that anyone can easily get set up with this; you will be able to enjoy the many benefits of your free electricity in a matter of days – all you have to do is get started now. So you’re probably eager to get in on all the details as to what this all entails; let me explain – it’s just a technique for taking advantage of the earth’s natural power suppliers – the wind and the sun. Do you realize that just about anyone can set up their own solar and wind power supply system in a matter of days without needing outside help?

Even if it happens to be that you are in the middle of a web research on homemade electric generators you should understand that you can quite easily build your own power supply system that can drastically reduce your power bills or even eliminate them entirely. You might be saying to yourself that this is too big an undertaking; that may have been the case a few years ago, but not now – fortunately for all of us, a well-respected expert in the highly specialized field of renewable energy has found a way for the average person to get in on it.

If you asked some random people what they know about Iceland, most would say the same thing, “I heard somewhere that Iceland was name that to keep people away and that Greenland was named to draw people their instead” Or, a derivation on that theme, “Isn’t it true that Iceland is green and Greenland is really mostly ice?” I have heard this countless times when I tell people I lived there. I am not criticizing; Iceland is not a familiar country to most people. Occasionally, though, people will know a little bit about the country and that is usually something related to geothermal.

I lived in Iceland for two years and it was a time that left quite an impression on me. Iceland is not an easy nation to characterize or label. You hear the phrase, “fire & ice” quite a bit which symbolizes much more than just Iceland’s geology. This phrase is a bit of an oxymoron but seems to sum up much of Iceland including its culture, economy and hardy population.

Iceland has only 300,000 people and an economy that is so small it makes you wonder how it manages on its own, but it does and quite well. One of the reason it does so well is because of it specific geographic location. The country straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, right on the spreading center, or divergent boundary, between two tectonic plates, the North American and Eurasian Plates. All this makes Iceland a hot bed – no pun intended – of volcanic activity and also rich in geothermal reservoirs.

Iceland has been utilizing this geothermal power for decades and they use it to heat about 90% of all homes and produce roughly one quarter of all their electrical needs. Most of their remaining electricity needs come from hydroelectric. So, you might guess that Iceland has a clean environment and you would be right.

Iceland has also helped to transform their economy with this abundant and cheap power by attracting power intensive industries such as primary aluminum smelters. This change is controversial though as many Icelander’s believe that their government is selling out one of the last pristine countries in the world. I am not taking sides, though I can understand both arguments. One the one hand, Iceland has few other natural resources and with dwindling fish stocks needs to fine away to attract foreign investment. They are doing this by commoditizing cheap, renewable electricity. On the other hand, there is certainly a value and strong argument to preserving pristine wilderness.

Why I think Iceland is going to be much better known in the coming years is by exporting their nearly unparalleled experience in geothermal development to countries all over the world. I see a future where Icelandic engineers are helping to develop geothermal reservoirs utilizing their innovations and expertise to help solve our growing energy crisis. I am a strong believer in green energy and it seems obvious that that is where we are headed whether we like it or not. So, maybe it is time to get to know this tiny island nation and make friends with all that fire and ice.

Iceland is dedicated to renewable energy development and is one of the few countries with plans to be 100% non-fossil fuel in the near future. They’ll do this with geothermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants.

There is a growing trend in today’s world towards using cleaner, greener, and most importantly, renewable resources. It is no longer a question of if we run out of oil, only when. And people are already feeling the pinch every time they gas up at the pump or get the latest gas bill.

The result of this trend has been more and more home owners looking into alternative energy sources to run their household on. This is both a necessary step in our evolution as a society and a sound economic choice for home owners today. What are some of the methods that can be used to power a home today? Let’s take a look at a few of the more common choices.

1. Solar Power

Everything on the planet runs on the energy provided by our sun. The oil your car runs on is nothing more than stored solar energy, when you get right down to it. So the move to solar power just makes sense. Solar power can be used in a few different ways. It is possible to run a home directly off of your solar panels, and rely on the power company to provide electricity when the sun is down or on cloudy days. When your solar panels are operating, you feed any energy you are not using at the moment back through your meter into the power grid. This has the effect of actually making your meter run backwards during the day. Hopefully, either you will produce more during the day than you use at night, or at least break even. The second and most common method of using solar power is to simply have your solar panels charge a large bank of batteries that your house then draws power from. Again, any excess energy produced can be fed back and sold to the power company, with electricity from the grid making up any shortfalls. The third way of utilizing solar power is somewhat more complex, and is probably not currently applicable to the average home owner. Using solar power to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen, you can store solar energy in much the same way as oil does, and release it later by combustion or fuel cells. This is really only feasible right for the power companies, but has the advantage of storing up excess solar energy in a form that can be used on cloudy days, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of power.

2. Wind Power

This alternative energy source is best used in conjunction with the solar power methods described above. In stormy weather, for instance, the sun may be hidden, but the wind may be blowing hard, and vice-versa for sunny days. This can help smooth out the available alternative energy levels available, and lead to more power being sold to the power company.

3. Hydroelectric Power

Most people would probably not think of hydroelectric power as a viable source of alternative energy for their home, but if you have access to a source of running water like a creek, you can generate a surprisingly large amount of power with only a small dam. When used either in conjunction with solar and wind, or on its own, hydroelectric power can easily completely replace the power company as the source of power in a home.

Did You Know? Home Wind Power Kits Can Help You Save Money and Preserve Your Natural Environment

Defining wind power and wind power kits

How is wind, a variety of solar energy, generated? The answer may be attributed to several ecology-related reasons. Different parts of the earth have differences in air temperatures. This is because, the uneven nature of earth’s surface result in the sun heating up the earth by unequal amounts. This hot air, being lighter follows a convectional movement upwards. This creates a hollow in the lower parts of the atmosphere, which gets occupied by the cold air drifting in from nearby areas. Such movement of air is termed ‘wind’. These movements generate a type of motional, or kinetic, energy. Wind energy is obtained from this kinetic energy, which is converted by modern, sophisticated machines. The various equipments for tapping wind power and generating electricity are collectively termed ‘home wind power kits’.

What are the advantages of home wind power kits?

Concerns regarding the increasing rates of environmental pollution are being voiced all over the world. This pollution is often caused by the traditional fossil fuel energy sources. The prices of these sources are becoming too high as well. Hence, wind energy is gaining acceptance all over the world, and for different purposes as well. The existing modern, dynamic techniques are ideal for optimal harnessing of wind power, with help from the home wind power kits. The renewable nature of wind energy is a major benefit, as is the fact that no pollution is caused due to usage of wind energy. Regeneration of electricity systems is certainly possible by using these kits. Hence, the demand for the latter is on a high. People should, however, patiently learn and understand how these kits actually work. This, though, is a rather easy task.

Drastic reduction in electricity charges is one of the primary attractive features of wind power. While wind energy kits can bring down electric bills by around fifty per cent on average, such reduction in the bills can even go up to even ninety per cent, provided the home wind power kit performs really well. Surplus generation of electricity is also possible, in case a house is located in a suitable place. These unutilized amounts can be sold to local owners of utility, in order to earn some cash. Convenience and ease of usage are common features of all wind turbines. All these turbines have two or three blades that are attached to a distinct rotor. The rotor then is connected to the principal shaft, which, in turn, helps to rotate the turbine. This entire process generates electricity. A height of around 100 feet (i.e., 30 meters) is generally recommended for setting up these wind turbines, since higher altitudes ensure continuous and unlimited wind flowing to the latter. Individuals can easily assemble the parts of a turbine on their own Alternatively they can take help from wind power workshops, books on this subject, and can also access online help.

Working advantages and downsides of home wind power kits:

All over the world, the prices of the traditional sources of power are escalating. In this scenario, wind energy offers a much more affordable source of energy. Hence, it is hardly surprising that people are using wind energy and home wind power kits, and that too for various purposes. The growing popularity of wind power kits can be attributed to their cost-effectiveness, power-saving characteristics, and their eco-friendly nature. These kits never produce any harmful greenhouse gases that might pollute the air and contribute to global pollution. Indeed, in the face of these substantial benefits, there are hardly any disadvantages of wind power systems.

A few thousand dollars is initially required, for installing the home wind power kits. This figure looks rather high at the first glance. However, compared with the manifold long run benefits of these kits, as well as the potential adverse effects of other alternative energy sources, this price is actually a rather reasonable one. All possible queries regarding installation can be solved by consulting the users’ manual that accompanies these wind power kits. Technical help is offered by many of the dealers; installation procedures are explained too in many such related websites. With its relative cheapness in use, as well as the large number of benefits wind power promises, demand for the latter is growing by the day.

Prior to setting up your home wind power kit, you should always refer to an instruction manual, so that you can know how to correctly set up the kit, and in which part of the house you should do so for the best results. You will also be able to know the source for free batteries and the ways to get the other components of the kit at reasonable prices. The way to wire the system as well as the necessary security precautions should is also included in the manual. After carefully going through all this in the manual, you can easily install your wind power kit and benefit from this.

There is money in alternative energy and big corporations are discovering this fact. Not only are existing companies securing their position, new companies that specialize in this new energy source are increasing also. Is there really money to be made or is this the new Eldorado? Many believe that this new form of converting ‘free’ energy has real potential. Let’s look at the most important reasons why.

The energy sources we use today have negative side effects. They cause lots of pollution. The pollution causes acid rain and the earth warm up. Besides these side effects the current reserves are diminishing. The crude oil reserves will last for the next 45 years to come and gas maybe 60 years. The only traditional fuels source that is still in ‘abundance’ is coal. The coal supply will last for the next 300 years. Thus, for everything that runs on a form of crude oil or natural gas we will have to find a good replacement. Many of us think alternative energy is the answer.

Why is alternative energy the answer for our energy problems? There are several reasons why. First it is a clean form of energy that doesn’t cause any harmful effects to the environment. We are realizing that this beautiful planet we live and breathe on needs to cherished. Not only for us but more important for our children. Thus we need to live our lives in a way that is not harmful for our planet. We are doing it right now and need to change that. Alternative energy can be the answer.
Second, these ‘new’ energy sources are available for nearly every one and they are ‘free’. Energy sources like the wind, sunshine and water are for every body and are free to use. We need technology to convert these sources in to useful energy needed for our appliances and transportation. These technologies come with a price tag and one can argue if these investments are worth it. If you feel that the investments are worth it or not, the technology is available. For the individual and for companies there are amazing technologies on the market. Companies that specialize in these energy sources are improving and coming up with new concepts that are better than ever before.

Companies that are developing these technologies are investing in their and our future and can become the next ‘oil barons’. They are not only securing a clean planet, but are also making money. History has taught us that technology is the key for success in the western modern world we live in. These companies that develop these new technologies can sell their knowledge through appliances and services they offer. Consumers and other needing companies are willing to pay for this. You can ask yourself if it is wrong that these companies are making money on something that is ‘free’ for all. When you really think of it, it really is nothing more than what is happening today all around us. It is just plain and simple economy, some one offers a product and another person buys that in exchange for money. Of course the price must be right.

When it comes to making use of alternative energy we need technology to convert the ‘free’ energy sources into forms that we can use. This technology can be expensive, but you will be saving money also. Because many governments are endorsing it, you may profit from tax credits as well or other benefits. Thus, for the right price the investment can be beneficial for all parties.
The hunt for new alternative energy sources is not a hunt for a non-existing golden happy dream. The conversion of alternative energy sources into usable energy is happening today and will be better tomorrow. It is real and here to stay, for a long time.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology promises to help us deal with the dwindling supply of fossil fuel. But how far away is this technology for you and me?

Aren’t you tired of the high price of gasoline for your car? Not to mention your concern for the environment. Well, a solution to both of these concerns may be just around the corner. For years, scientists have being working on an alternative energy source that promises to change the way we live by changing the source of fuel for some of our most basic energy-using engines. This new technology is called a fuel cell, and it’s based on using water as the original source of the fuel! A fuel cell provides a DC (direct current) voltage that can be used to power motors, lights, or any number of electrical appliances–including cars.

The technical name for a fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device. You’ve actually been using one for many years, which is a battery. All batteries are electrochemical energy conversion devices.

But hydrogen fuel cell technology is a new twist on an old theme. Here’s the basic idea of how it works:

A fuel cell converts the chemicals hydrogen and oxygen into water, and in the process it produces electricity. The difference between a simple battery and a fuel cell is that all the chemicals are stored inside the battery. The battery converts those chemicals into electricity but eventually it “goes dead” as the chemicals are used up. So you end up either throwing it away or recharging it.

On the other hand with a fuel cell, chemicals constantly flow into the cell. So as long as there is a flow of chemicals into the cell, electricity flows out of the fuel cell. Simply put, a fuel cell releases electrons from the hydrogen gas, creating electricity with the waste product being pure water! The electricity is used to power an electrical device–like the electric motor to run your car.

In an internal combustion engine, the gasoline engine burns gas and the battery converts chemical energy back into electrical energy when needed. However, fuel cells should do both tasks more efficiently.

This reaction in a single fuel cell produces only about 0.7 volts. To get this voltage up to a reasonable level, many separate fuel cells must be combined to form a fuel-cell stack.

One problem with using hydrogen is that it is not easily stored for consumer use. Other alternatives could be natural gas, propane, and methanol gas. But the primary objective of using fuel cell technology is pollution reduction. The fuel cell is also very efficient. Around 80% of the fuel used in these hydrogen fuel cells is converted into usable energy compared to only 20% for a gasoline powered engine and about 30% overall for a battery powered electric vehicle.

There is no question that the fuel cell holds great promise for the future. However, many challenges remain, and it’s been predicted that hydrogen fuel cell technology won’t be available for the masses until around 2050.

The obvious main reason to be conserving energy is for environmental purposes with climate change already being seen across the world, the polar ice caps melting and nearer to home, the floods the UK has experienced over the past three years.?

Sustainable energy solutions within the home can come from all manner of points. Recycling of household waste, cardboard, plastic, glass and paper (trying not to buy products with so much packaging to start with). Then the changes that can be made to the actual house such as double glazing and cavity wall insulation.

An energy efficient boiler is a must for any household as an old inefficient boiler creates high energy bills which in turn will eat at more of the valuable world energy supplies. A brand of boilers which have high green credential s and are proven money savers is the Worcester Bosch Greenstar range. An energy efficient Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior Combi Boiler for example, can provide a household with all their heating and hot water needs and these boilers are dedicated to providing renewable energy solutions. Many of these boilers have an energy efficiency rating of over 90% and can often cut heating and hot water bills by fifteen to twenty per cent. The combi boilers for example the Worcester Greenstar 24i Junior Combi Boiler delivers energy saving performance by recycling exhaust gases to extract and re-use latent heat.

?Other energy saving boilers are condensing gas-fired boilers and condensing oil-fired boilers where at least 93% of the oil consumed is converted into heat for the heating and/or hot water system.

?Renewable energy devices are being introduced more frequently now in the form of solar panels and ground heat source pumps. Many of the leading plumbing and heating brands have solar panel products for the heating of hot water. Some packages can reduce an annual water heating bill by up to 60%. Solar cylinders are also available which enables a dual heat source application utilising the solar panels with one coil, and the boiler (or other heat source) with the other coil.

And finally ground source heat pump systems that tap into the natural heat found in the ground just metres below the Earth’s surface. A ground source heat pump works by keeping fluid in the evaporator slightly cooler than the source, enabling it to draw latent heat from the earth via heat collectors which are buried in the ground.

It?s hard to know much energy to conserve when you don?t know how much you are using. For most of us, the only information we get is what is presented in our monthly electricity bills. What if you could get down to the appliance level and figure out how much power in the form of kilowatts is being consumed? Or even better, if you knew what that translated to in terms of actual dollar costs- you would be equipped to make better decisions about how and when to use energy consuming devices.

The answer is in the form of Electricity Monitors. These handy devices allow you to measure how much power is consumed by anything that runs on electricity. Here?s how it works: you insert the plug of the device you want to measure into the electricity monitor. You then plug the electricity monitor into the electrical socket. You can get instant statistics on volt, amps and wattage consumed. There are several models of Electricity Monitors available on the market today with different features and levels of details to measure electricity consumption.

One of the most popular brands available is Kill a Watt meters from P3. Their most basic model, the Kill a Watt P4400 features an LCD display that shows you how much many kilowatt hours are being consumed and lets you cycle through voltage (volt), amperage (amp), wattage (watt), line frequency (Hz), and power factor (VA) for the device being monitored. To go a step further, the KIll A Watt EZ Electricity Monitor P4460 model extrapolates the data so that you can forecast usage by week, month and year.

EED?s Watts Up Meter work in a similar fashion to the P3 Kill a Watt Monitors, in that you plug your device into the electricity monitor to get consumption statistics. Where they differ is EED Watts UP Meters? ability to let you plug in your utility rates so that you can calculate how much that translates into actual costs. The standard model, the Watts Up 57777 can calculate cumulative consumption and cost of the monitored device if it?s left plugged in for a period of time. The Watts Up Pro 99333 model can store load data for a week or month and can be downloaded to a computer and further analyzed with the Watts Up Pro software. The main difference between the Pro model and the Watts Up Pro/ES 82756 model is that the later can store twice volume of data.

Blue Line?s Power Monitors follows a different mechanism to track your real time power usage. You have two components with this solution: a sensor and a monitor. The sensor attaches to your electrical meter which is located outside your home. Using a wireless data transmission, the sensor communicates with the LCD display which can be located anywhere. It transmits real information on kilowatt usage. By entering your utility rate, this innovative solution can even calculate how much your electricity is costing you. By viewing your real time and cumulative electricity costs , you can make better informed decisions about using energy more efficiently.
