Tackling climate change has been high on the list of priorities for politicians and leaders around the world recently. Governments across the globe are making pledges to cut carbon emissions and work together in order to create a brighter future for everyone.

The Scottish government have been particularly pioneering when it comes to environmental concerns and are aiming to obtain 31% of Scotland’s electricity from renewable energy by 2011 with this figure rising to 50% by the year 2020.

The efforts being made by Scottish ministers will not only help to meet UK renewable energy goals but will also help to achieve shared European targets.

Most of this renewable energy will be created by wind farms, as this technology is well developed and commercially viable.

Scotland’s potential wind generating capacity (36.5 GW) far exceeds its requirements (10.5 GW), which means there is potential for the country to become a net exporter of wind-produced electricity.

The gusty Scottish weather means there are plenty of opportunities to generate power through both onshore and offshore wind energy. Scotland has 25% of Europe’s wind energy source and around 60% of the United Kingdom?s onshore wind installed capacity, giving the country the potential to become a powerhouse in the renewable energy industry.

The majority of this wind energy is generated in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, an area which is comparable to the size of Belgium and one of the windiest places in Europe.

Asides from commercial viability, there are many reasons why wind farms are advantageous. Wind power is a clean way of producing energy as there is no dangerous resulting waste and wind farms do not contribute to global warming.

Wind power is a cost effective way of generating energy. The first offshore wind turbines in Scotland are now producing power more cheaply than the most recently erected nuclear power stations.

The abundance and reliability of wind power is another plus point. Scotland?s wind factor makes it the ideal location for wind farms and the resource is much greater during the colder months of the year when energy demand is at its highest. Wind farms are also a good way of supplying energy to remote areas.

Wind farms are a proven effective way to generate green energy and wind power is now one of the most popular energy technologies. Wind energy is also popular with the public; just over eight out of ten Britons are in favour of wind energy.

Environmental concerns and a decline in available fossil fuels mean that renewable sources of power are set to become increasingly valuable. Scotland?s natural resources and excellence in research, technology and innovation mean it has the potential to be at the forefront of the global renewable energy market in coming decades and wind power Scotland looks like a trend that is set to continue.

“The Industrial Technologies Program with US industry to improve industrial energy efficiency and environmental performance. The program invests in high-risk, high-value R&D (research and development) to reduce industrial energy use while stimulating productivity and growth.” This program has six key strategies:

    * Focus on energy-intensive industries

    * Use public-private partnerships to plan and implement the program

    * Identify Grand Challenges to dramatically improve industrial energy efficiency

    * Implement a balanced technology portfolio

    * Perform process specific and crosscutting R&D to improve long-term energy efficiency

    * Perform technology delivery activities to improve near and mid-term energy efficiency

Solar Energy Technologies

As the name states, this program focuses on creating solar energy technologies to power the world. “Solar energy technologies have great potential to benefit our nation. They can diversify our energy supply, reduce our dependence on imported fuels, improve the quality of the air we breathe, offset greenhouse gas emissions, and stimulate our economy by creating jobs in the manufacturing and installation of solar energy systems.” Significant advances must be made in the solar energy technologies of concentrating solar power, photovoltaics, and solar heating and lighting.

Vehicle Technologies

“The Vehicle Technologies Program is developing more energy efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation technologies that will enable America to use less petroleum.” One of the overall purposes is to replace oil with other fuels that can be produced in the United States in a clean and cost-competitive manner. Through 2 endeavors, the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership and the 21st Century Truck Partnership, the following goals are being worked towards:

    * FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership: “…the development of emission and petroleum-free cars and light trucks and the infrastructure to support them.”

    * 21st Century Truck Partnership: “…to safely and cost-effectively move larger volumes of freight and greater numbers of passengers, while emitting little or no pollution, with dramatic reduction in dependence on imported oil.”

Weatherization & Intergovernmental

This program provides the funding and technical assistance to state and local governments, Indian tribes, and international agencies to enable them to implement renewal energy and energy efficient technologies. Weatherization & Intergovernmental Program activities focus on:

    * Multiple Technologies

    * Work across All Energy Market Sectors

    * Partnerships

    * Leverage of Federal Resources

Wind & Hydropower Technologies

The United States Department of Energy “is working with wind industry partners to develop clean, domestic, innovative wind energy technologies that can compete with conventional fuel sources. DOE’s Wind Energy Program efforts have culminated in some of the industry’s leading products today and have contributed to record-breaking industry growth.”

“Since 1976, the US Department of Energy has conducted hydropower research and development to increase the technical, societal, and environmental benefits of hydropower while advancing cost-competitive technologies.”

The history of alternative fuel can be found way back in the 1900?s but as a result of political and economical factors, the development of alternative fuels was short lived. Fossil fuels are still the foundation of the economy but in the 1970?s, there was a extreme fuel shortage in America that led to taking a serious look at alternative fuels.

Due to an over reliance on fossil products, America were at the mercy of foreign countries with oil reserves to run their economy. This led to a paradigm shift when in 1973, OPEC reduced its production, corresponding causing an increase in oil prices. As a result the world has to take a serious view of the reliance and in 1978, diesel engines began regaining popularity as well as other alternative fuel such as biodiesel.

Now, almost 3 decades later, the world is dawn to many other sources of alternative fuels. Ethanol is one of the fuels that is taken its place and is essentially make from grain. Researchers have come up with a certain form of grain alcohol that can power a combustion engine as well as oil-based products but more kind to the environment. In addition, it is much economical to produce too besides creating more jobs for corn farmers.

Other forms of alternative fuels are methane, propane, and hydrogen that can be used to power modern vehicles. But to effectively run such fuels on traditional engines, modifications have to be done. Thus, this led to the development of the modern alternative fuels vehicles.

Technology and environment have much less to do with the development of alternative fuels than mainly politics. To a certain degree, it is true as politicians, being politicians, tend to lean on mass opinions. With global warming becoming hip, politicians lean towards supporting and developing alternative fuels.

Whatever the motive, it has been proven beyond any doubts that alternative fuels contribute effectively to the environment. In retrospect when it comes to the development of alternative fuels, great advancement has been made and the present and near future, new technologies will emerge to make it an exciting technology.

Different types of alternative fuels continue to make big stride and will continue as fossil fuels are limited and will in due course dry up. Being environmental conscious is essential but alternative replacements are necessary and scientists will continue to make alternative fuels technologies more cost effective as well as efficient to use so that the masses will take to it.

Every day we see new and improved devices that use electricity. And, in increasing watts, the electricity is supplied by rechargeable batteries. The benefits of new battery technologies mean they are being used in new and exciting ways. For example, almost every new and improved small appliance includes current new electronics and the latest software together resulting in more? features for your benefit. The forces of competition conspire to provide you with free, new benefits.

Haven’t times changed? There was a time when every adult had a personal time piece – usually a wrist watch – each person valued and relied on it. Today, a whole generation would rather have a cell phone. A few years ago, we laughed in exasperation at the number of clocks we reset when there was a power failure or in anticipation of the change to or from daylight savings time. Now, the blinking lights are becoming a thing of the past as those devices are improved by additional computer resources so that they use small amounts of battery supplies and their internal programming to take care of these minor chronological? problems? as an automatic function. The point is that we live in households and businesses that have increasing demands for stored electricity – it is just a modern reality and an acceptable trade-off in order to keep our up to date electronics working as expected. Certainly this is one of the motivations for adding solar panels and wind turbines to our homes and businesses. For our portable appliances or devices, we should consider portable solar chargers.

Portable solar chargers come in a variety of sizes and with a wide range of their own features. One of the most important is power generation capacity, the amount of watts that the charger can generate in an hour. This will give you an idea of the kind of devices that the charger will charge for you. Nothing is more frustrating than leaving your favorite device plugged in for hours before you realize that it can’t generate enough electricity to charge that device. This suggests the next important feature. Does the charger include the connectors you need for your devices? Once you know what devices can be charged, you must be sure the charger? has the connectors for your devices. These are the two basic important features.

Portable solar chargers have panels that must be placed where they can convert light into electricity. These panels respond in different ways to different wavelengths of light – from infrared to ultraviolet. The panels are also available in rigid and flexible formats in various sizes. Solar panels are increasingly part of the design of all kinds of consumer goods, the panels may be single purpose photovoltaic sheets or part of your clothes or other accessories.

Rechargeable batteries should be part of your consideration simply because so many of the devices you use, require separate batteries in various formats. AA and AAA are ones you likely use in large quantities although C, D, and nine volt batteries are also very common. A portable solar charger should be part of your personal power generation planning for charging these batteries to keep your devices working well, clean and green.

The amount of energy used in the home is at an all time high, and being consumed at an alarming rate. Many people use electricity more than they really need to, and the pay for it without complaining. Others think the cost of it is too high and they want to use it as little as possible. Either way, there are various alternative energy sources that you can use for your home. This can help slow down the depletion of natural resources and save you money.

As technology continues to change and move forward, consumers are being offered many alternatives. While many of the ideas that are being promoted today as alternative energy sources aren’t new, there are more ways to incorporate them than ever before. There is also a way to calculate the savings that these alternatives offer, and that is generally the motivating factor that causes people to move forward with implementing them.

You may have discovered windmills popping up in various locations, and that is due to the fact that wind energy is a great alternative to offering you power instead of using electricity. The windmill has come a long way from the days when it was used to grind up grain. They are more appreciated as a source of energy than anything else.

The energy from the sun, called solar energy, is a great alternative to electricity. You can easily install solar panels on your roof to collect energy. You will only use electricity as a back up source when all of the energy has been used up. The energy from a solar source is able to heat your home, dry your clothes, and run various household appliances. Many people are able to use solar power to supply all the energy they need for their entire home.

Of course this is a different type of solar energy than our parents used when they hung clothes outside on the line to dry. Yet the introduction of the clothes dryer is just one more device that uses up electricity.

Water can also be a valuable alternative source of energy. Hydropower is the ability to use water currents to operate generators. Hydropower is another concept that goes back to the era of grinding up grains into flour.

One type of alternative energy source that you may not be aware of is biogas. This is the process of decomposition of various materials. This is a great way to save money on the cost of heating your home, especially if you live in a cold weather area.

There are plenty of different resources for you to consider when it comes to alternative energy sources. They are a great way to save the resource of electricity as well as to save money on the cost of your energy sources. Take the time to find the one that is the most practical and cost effective for your home. Many people don’t live where they can install a windmill but they do live where the sun shines all day long.

We all need to do our part to make the environment cleaner, and you can do yours by choosing an alternative energy source. It is important for us to keep as many of the natural resources for future generations as possible. Once you compare the price of installing the alternative energy source to the amount of money you will save, you will see why it is a win/win situation for you personally and for the entire environment.

If you are tired of electric bills and you are currently researching the subject of how to build an electricity generator then you should keep on reading – you may find it ’shocking.’ What if you were to learn that you can generate more than enough electrical power to run every appliance in your home, all alone, at almost no cost to you – does this sound unbelievable? Keep reading the following report and you’ll soon learn the facts.

It’s like this – most people expect the electric company to supply their electricity; they struggle to pay the high prices even as they are wondering where they will get the money for something like electricity. However, there are the lucky (or smart) ones who found an excellent alternative; they didn’t want to be saddled with all those bills – what they wanted is absolutely free and unlimited power supply that would last for a lifetime.

While you continue looking into the topic of how to build an electricity generator be sure to consider the real possibility of starting your own energy generating system; you will be able to enjoy the many benefits of your free electricity in a matter of days – does free, clean energy sound appealing to you? So you’re probably eager to get in on all the details as to how this can be achieved; let me explain – it’s just a technique for creating electricity out of ‘thin air’ or ‘out of the blue’ through the power of the wind and the sun. Can you believe that it’s both possible and easy for people to build a windmill and/or solar energy system to create their own electricity in several days without even leaving their property?

Even if it happens to be that you are in the middle of a web research on how to build an electricity generator hopefully you now realize how easy it is to build your own power supply system which can let you do away with the monthly electric bills once and for all. Perhaps this sounds like too much to take on all by yourself; that may have been the case a few years ago, but not now – the good news is that a leading specialist in the fast-growing field of wind and solar power ‘cracked the code’ that enables anyone to do that.

The current dominant conventional fuels that are used include fossil fuels, petroleum, uranium, coal and propane. There has been growing concern about these conventional fuels, thus leading to the increasing demand for, and interest in alternative fuels.

People in general are becoming acutely aware of the degradation of the earth and that they have to make drastic changes in order to keep our world from being destroyed. The effects of conventional fuels such as fossils fuels are known to contribute to global warming, and the emission of harmful gasses into the air from petrol driven vehicles is having a severe effect on air pollution. Aside from this, the ever rising cost of fuel and concerns about the demand for fuel exceeded its supply, are mitigating factors for the need for alternative fuels.

The Pros of Alternative Fuels
Alternative fuels such as bio-diesel, bio-alcohol, fuel cells, hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas and vegetable oil are now well known and deemed to be greatly more desirable in the quest to preserve our planet. There are a number of benefits to using alternative fuels. Firstly, alternative fuel-powered vehicles will emit less harmful gasses into the air resulting in less pollution. Biodiesel is also completely renewable as its primary source is vegetable oil. So there is no need to throw out used oil as it can be collected and refined. Secondly, these fuels can also prolong the engine life of your vehicle and are generally cheaper than conventional fuels. Thirdly, they burn more efficiently and will therefore help you save money. In addition to this, using alternative fuels will also help countries to end their dependency on foreign oil. It?s common knowledge that this relationship between countries has led to war and unrest. By countries manufacturing their own alternatives fuels, we can hope for less of this violence and more independence.

The Cons of Alternative Fuels
Although alternative fuels are becoming more and more popular, they are not yet perfected. Alternative fuel vehicles are substantially more expensive than conventional fuel vehicles and at the moment it seems that only the more affluent members of our society can afford these eco friendly cars. Alternative fuels are also not readily available and often finding a gas station to fill your alternative fuel car can be quite a feat. As this technology is new, there are also few places that can service these cars.

I don?t doubt that we are still in for many years of debate on the benefits and drawbacks of Alternative Fuels. The most important issue however, has to be conserving the world we live in. We know that the daily use of conventional fuel is contributing to destroying our planet and I?m sure that everyone would gladly consider an alternative to that.

Additionally, residential consumption of natural gas is projected to fall by 6 percent from 2005 levels this year but increase by 7.7 percent in 2007, the EIA says.

Energy conservation would help those cooling bills now and in the future. To help save energy:

* Put curtains on your windows to keep out the sun.

* Install a thermostat that will automatically adjust temperatures. Set it for 75 degrees in the summer when you are at home and raise it when you are out.

* Turn off lights, appliances and electrical equipment when not in use. Do your baking, washing, drying and ironing early in the morning or the evening.

* Clean or replace the filter for your air conditioner.

* Let dishes air dry in the dishwasher.

Costs related to natural gas consist of four main components: production, transmission, distribution and commodity price as determined by the marketplace.

When the gas is produced, it is transmitted over long distances by pipeline from the wellhead to a local gas company. Once at the gas company, it is stored and then distributed to local customers. The price of natural gas consumed is determined by supply, demand and other market conditions.

The Gulf of Mexico supplies 25 percent of domestic natural gas that is consumed in the U.S. But 11 percent of Gulf production is still blocked due to damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Twenty-three percent of natural gas goes to home use and 27 percent goes to electricity generation. Companies like Mammoth Resource Partners Inc., a Kentucky-based oil and gas exploration company, are striving to put a dent in skyrocketing natural gas prices by tapping into the gas-rich Appalachian Basin.

“While people are facing ever-increasing energy costs, investors recognize that within these increases exists a greater investment potential,” says Roger L. Cory, president of Mammoth Resource Partners.

The applications of nuclear reactors as our main power source for the future is a huge subject of debate, named The Nuclear Debate. The generation of nuclear power from nuclear fuel for civilian purposes is a quest that 21 one companies are taking on for the first time since 1973. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports they will seek permission to build 34 power plants from New York to Texas. Multi billion dollar investments that were riding on the choice of an energy source are now being funneled into new nuclear energy projects costing several billion dollars for each plant.

Supports claim new nuclear plants are needed because of the variable needs for different amounts of energy to be stored and released at different times. This is also known as base power. Hydroelectricity comes close with it?s man made dam control that allows us to release more power as needed but as the natural conditions must be in place the potential for stored nuclear power is so much greater. Nuclear energy supporters claim back up sources are necessary with other forms of energy like wind and solar because they fail to produce a constant supply or surplus of energy that is offered by nuclear power.

The primary environment impacts of nuclear power come from Uranium mining, radioactive emissions and heat waste. The greenhouse gas emissions produced thru the nuclear fuel cycle are only a fraction of those produced by fossil fuels. However, new nuclear power plants are considered unfavorable by anti-nuclear organizations because of the initial cost of constructing them and the fact that a new plant will take 10 years to build. Because each plant costs several billion US dollars it is hard to imagine that money will be left over for research which could make plants cheaper and more efficient. To get an idea of the scope of building that would be necessary if we wanted to count on getting 80% of our energy from nuclear fission, we would need thousands of new plants. Nuclear development is therefore conceivable on the scale necessary only if it is backed by inappropriately large economic subsidies in the form of taxpayer funded research and development and risks.

Public subsidies and tax expenditures involved in research and security. The decommissioning of a nuclear facility has unforeseen potential costs as we do not know what it may cost to dispose, safely of the nuclear waste and the taxpayers might pay for this risk. With new nuclear plant building beginning again, alternative energy source development advocates are also worried about the lack of research and development for other power sources. Because of the massive power potential of nuclear energy there is a danger that there could be a lock-in effect or the creation of market entry barriers for other sources of energy like solar and wind energy. Other competing energy sources still receive large direct production subsides and tax breaks in many nations.

As long as the subsidies continue to be given for alternative energy sources while we enter a new ten year nuclear energy plant construction period, energy solutions can come from many alternative sources both corporate and homespun, yet none with as much energy potential and on the massive scale of nuclear energy development.
